What Is Thai Yoga Massage?

The Basics
Performed on a mat on the floor with the client comfortably clothed, Thai Massage uses two primary procedures.

bullet

The first of these applies pressure to acupressure points and sen (energy) lines, to stimulate the energy body and internal organs.

The second utilizes a large number of passive movements to open and balance the muscular-skeletal structure and to release blockage and restriction.

Thai Yoga massage combines acupressure, reflexology and applied yoga stretches. The practitioner uses feet, elbows, palms thumbs and knees to apply pressure. The sequences of stretching and acupressure work are given in a smooth and harmonious way, with each move dissolving into the next.

History
Originating in India over 2500 years ago Thai Massage is one of the oldest healing modalities known. With a foundation in Ayurvedic Medicine, Yogic Asana's and Buddhist Meditation, it spread east and is now associated with Thailand, where it evolved into a sophisticated  and comprehensive holistic therapy.

Chavutti Thirummal Ayurvedic Massage

What is it?
This massage treatment is a blend of continuous, rhythmical strokes using warm oils and is administered by the foot of the masseur/se,  whilst balancing on one leg and holding onto an overhead rope. This thorough and exotic treatment lasts approx one and a quarter hours  and during this time the repetitive rubbing and ironing out of the client, encourages the loosening and releasing of tension and pain throughout the whole body.

This enables the practitioner to use her foot to travel the whole length of the body in one sweeping, flowing stroke, working from the fingertips to the toes.  This allows for a wonderfully deep continuous movement, this being just one of the unique characteristics of the massage.

With the combination of connected breath-work of the client there is an overall balancing of all systems, including the meridians, the circulatory systems, a toning and stretching of all muscle tissue, a detoxifying of all the major organs. All this can leave the client feeling "taller", energised and renewed.

Where does it come from?
Chavutti Thirummal comes from Kerala in Southern India. This is the home of the ancient art of Kalaripayattu, a martial art, and Kathakali, a classical style of dance. Both these traditional arts use the Chavutti treatment on a continuous basis to promote strength and suppleness to aid the practitioners in preventing injury during their training sessions.
